Woven quietly into the architecture of Mar Hall is a symbol, a soft, clover-like shape known as the quatrefoil. At once familiar and timeless, it speaks to a deeper story embedded in the fabric of the estate. Its roots lie in the Gothic Revival, a movement that swept across Britain in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, an era that embraced a return to artistry, grandeur, and thoughtful design. It was a time when buildings told stories, every arch held intention, and every ornament was a language of its own. Around 1828, as Mar Hall’s story began, the quatrefoil appeared throughout the estate, from carved stone façades to vaulted ceilings, decorative plasterwork, and intricate wooden panelling. At Mar Hall, the quatrefoil is more than decoration. It’s a thread connecting past to present, tradition to transformation.
