Loch Lomond
Every intrepid visitor to Scotland should place the bonnie banks of Loch Lomond at the top of their travel wishlist — they’ve inspired one of our national songs for good reason! The unparalleled landscapes of the Trossachs and the Arrochar Alps are a must-see, offering a wealth of scenic walks and breathtaking viewpoints to explore, including Whinny Hill Wood, the Conic Walk, Luss Viewpoint, and Balloch Castle Country Park.
For families and animal enthusiasts, get up close and personal with all kinds of avians at the Loch Lomond Bird of Prey Centre, discover local aquatic life at the SEA LIFE Loch Lomond Aquarium or go pony trekking through the scenic trails of the surrounding countryside.
We highly recommend taking a cruise on the Loch for the best views and booking a tour of The Maid of the Loch, a vintage 1950s steam boat that sits upon the southern shore.
Getting there: Drive west from Mar Hall Resort via the M8, then take the M898 to cross the Erskine Bridge. Continue onto the A898, which merges with the scenic A82, and follow it north to Balloch.
The Isle of Arran
The Isle of Arran sits off the West Coast of Scotland across the Firth of Clyde. Steeped in history, it offers spectacular views, picturesque scenery, and a wide range of sights to see and activities to enjoy.
Some of our favourite things to do include:
-
Brodick Castle, Garden and Country Park. Explore a genuine 19th century baronial castle, its stunning gardens, and its period furniture and art.
-
Hike the Glen Rosa and see the Blue Pool, a natural wonder formed by powerful glaciers around 18,000 years ago.
-
Indulge at the Arran Chocolate Factory. Here you can buy deluxe and luxury chocolates to enjoy while you are there or take home to loved ones.
-
Discover the Arran Heritage Museum, a vintage farm with gardens and a café featuring interesting information about the geology, archaeology, and anthropology of the island.
For those who don’t mind the drive round the island, the King’s Cave on the West Coast of the Island is said to be home to some early Christian Carvings. Lochranza Castle is another popular historical landmark worth a visit to the very north of the Island.
Getting there: To get from Mar Hall to the Isle of Arran, drive west to Ardrossan Harbour (about an hour’s journey), where you can catch the CalMac ferry to Brodick on Arran. The ferry crossing takes approximately 55 minutes, offering scenic views of the Firth of Clyde.
Stirling
If you’re looking for a taste of Scotland’s complex and rich heritage, be sure to stop in Stirling. This historic city is home to the renowned Stirling Castle, which served as the residence for several of Scotland’s late medieval kings and queens, including James IV and Mary, Queen of Scots.
Stirling is also famous for the Battle of Stirling Bridge in 1297, where William Wallace triumphed over English forces. The National Wallace Monument, located on Abbey Craig, honours his legacy and provides stunning views.
For those interested in seeing wildlife up close, Blair Drummond Safari Park is a fantastic family outing—just remember to book your tickets in advance.
Getting there: Drive east from Mar Hall Resort onto the M8, then take the M80 northbound directly to Stirling, following signs to the city centre.
City of Edinburgh
Be it the castle at the heart of the city, the various museums that populate the city centre, or the diverse selection of restaurants, Edinburgh makes for an excellent day trip.
Your Scottish adventure should most definitely include a visit to Edinburgh Castle, but there’s plenty of historic gems to discover in the capital. We recommend a wander around John Knox House to get a taste of 16th century life, booking a free guided walking tour at St Giles’ Cathedral and exploring the exhibits at the National Museum of Scotland.
A visit to The Real Mary’s King Close is a must, and you can complete your exploration of the dark side of Edinburgh with a ghost tour or a visit to the Underground Vaults.
Getting there: To get from Mar Hall to Edinburgh by car, drive east on the M8 motorway towards Glasgow, then continue on the M8 eastbound directly to Edinburgh.
Glengoyne Distillery
Located north of Glasgow near the Campsie Fell hill range, Glengoyne is often described as Scotland’s most beautiful distillery. Set in a hidden glen and next to a waterfall, this charming brewery is the perfect place to enjoy a “wee dram” and learn about Scotland’s national drink.
The distillery offers a range of unique experiences, including a Malt Master session where guests create their very own individual whisky to take home.
Getting there: Drive northeast from Mar Hall Resort for about 45 minutes via the M8 and A81. The route takes you through picturesque countryside, arriving at the distillery nestled at the foot of the Campsie Fells.
Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park
To our west is the rolling moors and glens of one of Scotland’s regional parks. With over 108 square miles of scenic countryside to explore, as well as outdoor activities including nature cruises and junior adventure courses happening on and around Castle Semple Loch, it’s the perfect destination for families and nature lovers seeking both relaxation and adventure.
Find out more at the park's website.
Getting there: Drive west from Mar Hall for approximately 45 minutes via the M8 and A737, heading towards Lochwinnoch.
Town of Callander
A picturesque town famous for its pies and nestled upon the border to the Highlands, Callander is a popular base for exploring the Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park and ‘Rob Roy Country’ but can easily be explored in a day.
You’ll want to take in the sight of Bracklinn Falls Bridge and Callander Crags. Follow the sign posts on your scenic walk to discover a dramatic waterfall and peaceful views. For the more adventurous hiker, plan a trip up Ben A’an or Ben Ledi for panoramic summit views.
Getting there: To get from Mar Hall to Callander, drive northeast via the M8 and A81 for approximately 45 minutes.
Ayr Beach
If you have a sunny, warm day, then Ayr Beach is a spectacular town right on the West Coast where you can enjoy it. Accessible by car or by train, Ayr is known for its scenic sea views on a clear day.
