DESCRIPTION OF HOLES
Designed by David Thomas, the Earl of Mar golf course is built on the grounds of Mar Hall Hotel,
along the banks of the river Clyde. Thomas, a well-known golf professional of the 60s, a former
runner up of two British opens, one in a play off with Jack Nicklaus, is also highly
respected as a course designer.
Over the last twenty years, Thomas has designed and built over 120 courses worldwide.
Most notable of his build are the Belfry, Slaley Hall, San Roque, La Manga west in Spain and
Le Baule in France. Now, his latest design here, the Earl of Mar.
Built over 160 acres the par 70 course measures over 6645 yards. There are two par 5s, four par
threes and 12 par fours. Adjacent to the first there is a large practice putting green and 330-yard
driving range. The 9th and 18 both finish in front of the clubhouse where full bar and
restaurant facilities are available daily.
John Mc Tear, a former PGA cup player, British Seniors Club professional Champion 2001, is now
the resident golf professional here at Mar Hall. John offers full on site tuition for golfers of all levels.
Hole 1 Par 5, 512 yards.
A gentle par 5 slight dogleg left, after two good shots you should be left with a wedge to the
elevated green, which is well protected, by large bunkers - long hitters may be tempted to go
for the green with their second shot.
Hole 2 Par 3, 214 yards.
A long iron or fairway wood to the narrow green, which has large oak trees surrounding it on
three sides. There is a large bunker at the front of the green.
Hole 3 Par 4, 402 yards.
Sharp dogleg left, the second shot is most demanding. Should you miss this green you will be
left with a difficult pitch shot to the plateau green.
Hole 4 Par 4,453 yards.
Long par 4 with wetland running up the left hand side of the fairway. There is a large bunker
positioned 50yds short right of a raised green protected by greenside bunkers.
Hole 5 Par 3,192 yards.
A short par 3 with out of bounds and the River Clyde on the right hand side, and a large bunker to
the left side of the green. This hole is fraught with danger.
Hole 6 Par 4,388 yards.
The hole runs parallel to the river. There is a large fairway bunker on the right hand side 220yds
from the tee. The second shot should not be short as there is a large bunker at the front of the green.
Hole 7 Par 4,415 yards.
This hole has two fairways. If you opt for the safe route down the middle, you may have to play a
long iron or a fairway wood from the tee to avoid the fairway bunkers positioned 220yds from the tee.
If you decide to hit up the right hand fairway you will have to hit a long straight drive of 250yds
through the large oak trees, this will leave you with a shorter second shot to the green.
Hole 8 Par 4, 356 yards.
A short par 4 and the tightest hole on the course, a good tee shot should leave you with a 9 iron
to the well-bunkered elevated green.
Hole 9 Par 4, 375 yards.

225yds on the right hand side of the fairway. The fairway slopes slightly left to right,
favour the left side of this hole.
Hole 12 Par 4, 438 yards.
Drive up the right side to avoid bunker left of fairway 245yds from the tee, second shot is to an
elevated green with a large bunker at the front of the green.
Hole 13 Par 4, 369 yards.
Drive up the left side of this fairway to avoid large bunker complex 200yds from the tee on the right
hand side. The second shot is played to a plateau green.
Hole 14 Par 4, 360 yards.
Drive from an elevated tee with spectacular views of the River Clyde and the Kilpatrick Hills.
The hole is a dogleg left; avoid bunker left side of fairway 200yds from the tee and the out of bounds
on the left. Don’t be short with your second shot as there are several bunkers at the front of this green.
Hole 15 Par 5, 514 yards.
Long Par 5 with the River Clyde on the left drive up the right side of this fairway to avoid bunkers
220yds from the tee, straight second shot required, this should leave a short pitch to the green.

on this hole as there is a large bunker 50yds short of the green.
